On 14th April 2026, Draft2Digital has announced new changes to their system, for listing their books on their store and other eBook stores. Amazon Kindle will be not effected at this time.
In short, it has become finically not viable at this time to continue using their services. This has forced me to make the painful decision to delist 2001: A Big Nutter Oddity from the many stores in the near future.
As Smashwords download is DRM Free, once the files are downloaded free for you to use regardless of what I think.
For more details:
Draft2Digital has introduced two new fees. A signup fee, which I do not need to pay for as I was Grandfathered in, and a Maintenance Fee: I would need to get at least 6 sales on the Smashwords store, at full price just to cover costs of the maintenance fee.
For Example: I’m using Smashwords as they’ve got the best Royalties rate. Draft2Digital also does wave the fee, however this is at US$100 in royalties. This works out to just under 50 sales in a year, if almost everyone purchased from Smashwords.
The issue: 2001: A Big Nutter Oddity has not gotten any full price purchases since Draft2Digital taken over, I have not gotten any sales at full price. This means that if base my predictions it on previous years of sales, I’d be paying to keep the maintenance fee out of pocket, or won’t be seeing payment for some time.
As 2001: A Big Nutter Oddity was released in 2009. I have already had 16 years of sales time. I could go for an advertising spree. But I’d be promoting a old book, in the hopes just to break even.
If 2001: A Big Nutter Oddity is leaving all these stores: Could we see the book on Kindle Unlimited?
Not immediately, given the nature of the 2001‘s release, it will take some time before all stores are no longer have the book. There are actually a several stores that 2001 is sold in are not managed via Draft2Digital, so delisting there will take some time.
What about my Copy of 2001: A Big Nutter Oddity?
I won’t be removing your copy from your account. As most copies are DRM free, which means that copy is effectively yours to do as you wish. All I request is that you don’t make it publicly available.
Ideally, what will happen is that the ability to buy from certain store will be removed. However, in some cases, re-downloading the book will become unavailable. I am aware that the book is also in a few lending Libraries, delisting may force your loaned copy to be removed soon after the book is delisted.
